A six-day training course to be led by Ian Greenway UKCP regd.

16/17 October, 20/21 November, 11/12 December 2010

9.30 am - 5.00 pm

Fee: £375.00 (Instalment Option - see below)

About the Course:

The course is designed to provide qualified counsellors and psychotherapists, and senior trainees with sufficient experience with clients, with an understanding of the theory, skills and practical experience that will equip them to work knowledgeably with couples. No prior training in couples work is required. The basic material of the course is informed by Ian's Gestalt roots and practice, however it is perfectly accessible to therapists of all schools of psychotherapy and counselling. Material will also be used from Person-centred, Object Relations, TA and other sources.

Working with couples provides a new dimension to our work as therapists. We are addressing here the raw phenomenological actuality of intimate connection and communication, and of the many ways these can go awry. Course content will include:

Psychological fit: why couples choose each other

Two into one: the challenge they face in being together

Facilitating change: the skill of working with more than one client

Stuck in a stage: understanding developmental process

Personal myths: how partners misunderstand each other

Communication and negotiating skills

Ian likes to offer as live a demonstration as possible of working with couples. He is offering free couples therapy, in front of the group, to participants who may want to invite their partners, or to clients or friends of participants who may want to volunteer, to take advantage of this opportunity. If this is of interest, please contact Ian directly on 0115 841 5089.

About Ian Greenway:

In 1981 I began work as a Marriage Guidance (now Relate) counsellor, a decision that led to me becoming a psychotherapist, and which initiated my continued and ongoing interest in couples work. I am a UKCP registered psychotherapist and a Teaching and Supervising Member (TSM) and examiner at the Gestalt Psychotherapy Training Institute. Throughout my present career I have retained an abiding interest in working with couples, work which I find fascinating and stimulating.

I have been a trainer in Psychotherapy at the Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute, Nottingham, at the Metanoia Institute, London (where I was Head of the Gestalt Psychotherapy Programme), and as visiting trainer at a number of establishments, including Institutes at Manchester, York, Edinburgh and overseas. I was the first trainer and assisted in the setting-up of the Slovenia Gestalt Institute, which I visited for many years. I was guest lecturer at the Psychosynthesis Education Trust, London and at the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education, London. On many of these courses I have provided workshops in working with couples, and this will be the third course I have offered specifically devoted to this topic.

I have also been a supervisor for many years, including having supervised the supervisors at the Nottingham Counselling Centre.
